How do you pay for it all?

Hello everyone:

Today’s blog asks the question: how do you pay for it all? A friend of mine recently found herself in an awkward situation:

She’s divorced, her ex does not pay any child support, her mother was ill and elderly, she is nearing retirement age herself, and her son is preparing to enter high school and is discussing colleges he might like to attend. So, how is she to pay for all of her son’s expenses, a nursing home for her demented mother, prepare for her own retirement, and pay for at least four years of college?

As it turned out, her mother died unexpectedly a couple of weeks ago and she found out that her son is doing so well in middle school that he will be taking all honors classes in high school. This will increase the likelihood that he will be able to get a scholarship, especially since he is also gifted at sailing and one of the colleges he is considering offers sailing scholarships. She may need to keep working longer than she originally thought but she is making plans for her future financial security.

What things have you been doing as a newly-single person to shore up your elderly years? If you haven’t given it much thought, you should.

Best,

Dr. Sheri

  1. Amazing blog! Is your theme custom made or did you download it
from somewhere? A design like yours with a few simple adjustements
would really make my blog shine. Please let me know where you got your theme.
    Appreciate it

    1. My theme came from the title of my first book. I was talking to a friend about the book I was then in the process of writing and said, “My book will help folks who find themselves Suddenly Single.”
      Thanks for your comment!

    1. People also read books, which is what I am hoping for with both of my books. With something like Suddenly Single, I find that folks find comfort in holding a book in their hands and feeling like someone is there with them.
      Thanks for commenting!

  2. fantastic submit, very informative. I’m wondering why the opposite experts
of this sector do not realize this. You should proceed your
writing. I’m confident, you have a great readers’ base already!

    1. Thank you so much for commenting and being so kind. I am in the process of writing my second book, Suddenly Single for Married Couples: A Practical Guide to Hoping for the Best while Preparing for the Worst. My agent is seeking a publisher for me!
I hope to hear from you again!

  3. First off I want to say wonderful blog! I had a quick question that I’d like to ask if you do not mind. I was curious to find out how you center yourself and clear your head before writing. I have had a tough time clearing my thoughts in getting my ideas out there. I truly do take pleasure in writing but it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are usually wasted just trying to figure out how to begin. Any recommendations or tips? Thanks!

    1. Thank you so much for your kind comments. As I prepare to write, I think about what I have learned about life’s trials in the past few days. Most of my friends know about my writing and have offered stories that they have heard from friends of theirs recently. I change enough details and do not include any names or locations, in order that my stories will appeal to more people and so that they will not reveal any identities. Then, I just sit at my computer and tell you, my beloved readers, a story. Like the story my nephew just told me….oh, wait, that is today’s blog.
Also, when talking to my college students (I teach for three colleges) about overcoming writer’s block, I tell them to do their research first. Next, they should put the headings on their document and start adding in the parts of the research they want to include in their paper. Next, they need to analyze the information and add their own opinion to the paper. At that point, they only have the conclusion and the introduction to write! Write the conclusion of the paper and then go back and “tell them what you want to tell them” in the introduction.
By the way, you might find my blog helpful. It is specifically for college students but I talk a lot about writing on it. The address is: http://www.practicalmakesperfect.com.
Thanks for commenting- I look forward to hearing from you in the future!

    1. Thanks for your high compliments, Amy. I love Fox News and actually had my graduation from college covered by our local affiliate. (My son and I graduated on the same day, one hour apart). I look forward to seeing comments from you in the future.

  5. Its like you read my mind! You appear to know so much about this,
like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you can do with a few pics to
drive the message home a bit, but instead of that, this is excellent blog.

A fantastic read. I will definitely be back.

  6. I’m impressed, I have to admit. Rarely do
I come across a blog that’s equally educative and entertaining, and without a doubt, you have hit the nail on the head.
The problem is an issue that too few people are speaking intelligently about.
I’m very happy I stumbled across this in my hunt for something relating to this.

  7. Good day! I just want to give you a huge thumbs up for your excellent information you have right here on this post.
I’ll be coming back to your website for more soon.

  8. You are so awesome! I don’t think I’ve read a single thing like this before.
So good to find someone with original thoughts on this issue.
Seriously.. thanks for starting this up. This site is one thing that’s needed on the web, someone with a little originality!

  9. You made a few good points there. I did a search on the subject and found a good number of folks will
    agree with your blog.
